Family history - It's in the blood!



Ron Atkins was the founder of Atkins Cycles Wholesale and the fore runner to what is now Ride. Ron was always a keen racing cyclist and a great competitor. He narrowly missed selection for the Olympics of 1948 when he placed 5th in a selection race (first 4 selected). Shortly after this time Ron became and avid worker for many cycling causes. He is a founder member of the Coventry road club, and was, along with Keith Edwards, a founder member of the British Cyclo Cross Association in 1954.

Edith Atkins (wife of Ron) was for a while, the star of long distance ladies cycling. In 1953 she set eight new records including the one for Lands End to John O'Groats. She covered the 871 miles in a time of 2 days 18 hours and 4 min's to beat the current record by 4 minutes which at a time had only been held by professionals.

John Atkins son of Edith and Ron was born in 1942, he became Britain's best ever cyclo cross rider. His first national title came in 1960 at the age of 18 and he went on to score 12 more, a record which still stands to this day. He is still Britain's highest placed senior rider in a world championship, placing 5th in Luxembourg only a handful of seconds behind winner Roger Devlaemink.

Paul Atkins Director of Ride and eldest son of John Atkins rode his first cyclo cross at the age of 12 and won it! But having the notion of "been there done that" he soon got into BMX biking. He was a professional BMX freestyler in the mid 80s with the Peugeot display team and and since then was enjoyed a successful career as a skateboarder. He still does demonstrations, competitions, and displays around the UK along with the next generation, Joe his son.

Darren Atkins also a director of Ride and second son of John Atkins has enjoyed a long career in all aspects of cycle sport. He has ridden as an elite/pro class rider for many years. On the road he was won the are championship 3 times and scored over 80 wins. In cyclo cross he has also managed to notch up many wins including the midland area champs in 2002 and two national team gold's.
